Introducing a new pet

INTRODUCING CATS AND DOGS WITH A PET TAXI. It's important to have realistic expectations when introducing a new pet to a resident pet. Cats are territorial and need to be introduced to other animals very slowly in order to give them time to get used to each other before there is a face-to-face confrontation. Slow introductions help prevent fearful and aggressive problems from developing.

Avoid any interactions between your pets that result in either fearful or aggressive behavior. If these responses are allowed to become a habit, they can be difficult to change. It's better to introduce your pets to each other so gradually that neither animal becomes afraid or aggressive. Allow the introduction to take place over a matter of weeks.

Use a Pet taxi large enough for the new pet to feel comfortable.  If it is a cat the pet taxi should be large enough for a litter box, as well as food and water bowls.  Let the new pet in the large pet taxi in the middle of the living room and then just go about your normal life.  Let the new pet see everyone interacting with each other as well as the other pets living in the home.

Do this daily.  Each day put the other pets living in the home in another location and allow the new pet to explore his or her new environment.  If the new pet is a cat, let him or her find safe places to retreat to in case they feel the need to do so.

This process can take several weeks.  Be patient and take time introducing the new pet to the rest of the family.

Volunteer Opportunities
At the Justin Animal Alliance, we have many volunteer opportunities available. We always need help with all aspects of the rescue. Feeding, changing water, mowing, walking the dogs, bathing the dogs, assistance with adoption events, transportation to/from vet appointments, and home visits - just to name a few. Any amount of time you can give is much appreciated. While our animals have been saved from various city shelter euthanasia lists, their care is on-going. Please donate your time, you can make the difference in an animal's life!!!!

The property owners only responsibility will be to provide daily food/water, and protection from the elements. After a short period of secure confinement, the barn cats will accept your barn as their new home.
